What do we mean when we say Spinal Deformity?
When the spine curvature has surpassed the healthy curve more than 9 degrees, medically it is termed as spinal deformity. We think that the spine is completely straight. However, it is otherwise. The spine is made of discs are series of gentle arcs. The portion in the lower back is curved slightly inwards as compared to the portion in the upper back which is curved forward.
Although when you get a top view of your head, it always appears to be straight!
What is the major classification of spinal deformity?
There are several reasons which can cause the spine to deform or curve abnormally.
- Scoliosis
This refers to the twisting of the spine. It is an arc on each side of the spine. It is common in both babies and adults. However, there could be more than one twist which gets diagnosed as scoliosis.
- Flatback Syndrome
When the spine has lost its natural ability to curve, this is termed as the flatback syndrome. It sounds normal because hey your spine is straight now. However, as long-term repercussions, it causes serious issues in walking and even standing because patients tend to bend forward.
- Spondylolisthesis
Commonly known as slipped disc, the primary cause of the issue is a birth deformity in general. In severe conditions the disc could get dislocated off the spinal column. This condition is known as spondylolisthesis.
What causes spinal deformity?
There are several reasons for a spinal deformity, most of which can be traced back to genetics. However, it is not always so.
- Pediatric
Growth spurt is a common phase in kids. When the child is growing rapidly, there is a possibility that the sine might get twisted. This constitutes the major rate of scoliosis in kids when they are in the pre-teenage age group.
- Posture
Bad posture is one of the leading causes of spinal deformity. Have you noticed how you tend to arch when you sit, or how your shoulders are rounded? Well, it is time to correct the posture because prolonged bad posture can lead to deformed spine.
- Age
This is common among geriatric patients where the spine undergoes wear and tear due to age or inability of the bones to heal. When the process is delayed or slowed down, it can cause issues like ligament hardening or even fractures which can put you out of your natural alignment.
